The longest chain carrying the ketone functional group is named by replacing the end -e with -one. Simple structures, such as acetone, are named using this method. More complicated structures, however, can be named using the ending -phenone, rather than just -one. Examples show below.

Physical Properties of Ketones

Ketones are much like aldehydes when it comes to physical properties. Because of the polar C=O group the compounds are polar and have higher boiling points than most compounds of comparable molecular weight. Ketones are also soluble in water due to their polarity.
