They are named by replacing the - ic acid of the corresponding carboxylic acid with the ending -aldehyde. Aldehydes may also be named by replacing the -e of the parent structure with -al. Examples shown below.

Physical Properties of Aldehydes

The polar carbonyl group makes aldehydes a polar compound. Thus they have higher boiling points than non-polar of the same comparable molecular weight. Aldehydes are also soluble in water due to their polarity.
